Phuoc Hau Pagoda is an ancient temple with old bamboo trees hidden in the shadow of the temple. The pagoda is located in Can Tho province. If you want to visit the pagoda, you can take a boat down the Hau river, downstream of Tra Om town. Phuoc Hau Pagoda is just 1km away from Tra Om town.

2. History of Phuoc Hau Pagoda

The pagoda was built in the second half of the eighteenth century. In 1895, the pagoda was restored by Zen master Hoang Chinh in Quang Ngai, and he kept restoring the pagoda again in 1910. The pagoda continued to be restored and expanded under Buddhist monk Tổ Khánh Anh from 1939 and Buddhist monk Thich Thien Hoa from 1961 to 1972. Thien Hoa Tower has been built by the head monk Thich Hoan Phu since 1972 to worship the essence of the most venerable Thich Thien Hoa.

Da Bao Tower was created in 1966 and consisted of three floors. Upstairs is to worship the Buddha image and the middle floor is to worship Pháp Bảo (a set of Pháp Hoa scriptures). The lower floor is to worship the remains of To Khanh Anh in the east, Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc’s remains in the south, the West to worship To Khanh Hoa’s remains, and the North to worship To Hue Quang’s remains. This ancient pagoda was restored once more in 1995 and became famous with two beautiful towers, Thien Hoa and Da Bao. These two towers contribute greatly to making Phuoc Hau pagoda shine.

Phuoc Hau Pagoda is an ancient temple which was built a long time ago and has been restored many times. Up to now, the temple still retains its ancient and solemn character. This place is one of the most ancient temples in Can Tho that many tourists, as well as local people, come to visit and pray for good luck every year.

Phuoc Hau Pagoda is a temple with many spiritual values for the beliefs of Vietnamese people. It still maintains many ancient architectures as the main hall, the middle hall, the lecture hall and the back house. Phuoc Hau Pagoda is a great tourist attraction for visitors to come, admire the fascinating scenery and catch the wind from the Hau river.

The annual Buddhist monk To Khanh Anh death anniversary on the 29th and 30th of January (lunar calendar) becomes a festival of numerous monks and nuns, Buddhists and local people. Phuoc Hau pagoda has been recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Information as a national historical and cultural monument.

All in all, Phuoc Hau Pagoda may be an apparently simple decorated temple, but it has many unique things. It is a pagoda where people are trying to preserve and develop a culture imbued with Vietnamese identity. The beauty of Phuoc Hau pagoda’s historical relics is the human value derived from the patriotic tradition and loyalty of the nation. That tradition has formed people to sacrifice for the truth, for the country and for the happiness of the next generation.
