Vietnam Museum Of Ethnology In Hanoi: Culture Of 54 Ethnic Groups In Vietnam

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is located in Nguyen Van Huyen Street, Cau Giay District, about 8km from the center of Hanoi. The museum has great meaning of national cultural values. For many visitors to Hanoi, Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is always on the list of “not-to-be-missed” destinations.

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology was constructed in 1981 in Hanoi with an area of ​​3.27 hectares. This project was designed by architect Ha Duc Linh and Veronique Dollfus (a French interior architecture designer). It is a small picture of the history and culture of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam. The artifacts here are displayed in various categories such as clothing, jewelry, weapons, musical instruments, religious beliefs, etc.

When To Visit Vietnam Museum Of Ethnology

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology opens every day except Monday, from 08:00 to 11:30 am and from 1:30 to 5:30 pm.

Entrance ticket can be bought at the main gate with the price of VND 40,000/adult, VND 20,000/student, and VND 10,000/pupil.

What To Do In Vietnam Museum Of Ethnology

The museum is divided into three main display areas: the outdoor one, the Bronze Drum area,  and the Southeast Asian area.

The Bronze Drum area has two spaces including a themed display space on the second floor, while the first floor introduces an identity of 54 ethnic groups. There are 15,000 artifacts and 42,000 images depicting daily life, costumes, farming tools, and religious beliefs as well as the customs of ethnic minorities. The artifacts here are translated into different languages mostly Vietnamese, English, French and some others. Tourists will be surprised by the beautiful objects which are carefully displayed from clothes and tools to models of rituals, funerals, weddings, etc. All of them are reconstructed as a small corner of life as well as the traditional culture of ancient ethnic people.

After visiting the Bronze Drum area, tourists will see a large courtyard, which is the outdoor display area. Here, tourists will have a chance to admire the unique architecture of the ethnic minorities such as the stilt house of the Ede and Tay people and the paved-roof house of H’mong people. In the middle of the garden is a pedal mill of Dao people.

Next, tourists can visit the Southeast Asia area in Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. From a distance, visitors will see this building in a kite-wing shape which symbolizes dreams, ambitions, and freedom – a traditional cultural feature of not only Vietnam but also ASEAN. This is also the exhibition hall of Southeast Asian culture, Indonesian glass picture, and so on. There is also a movie theater and a multimedia room where visitors can learn more about Vietnamese and Southeast Asian countries’ traditional culture.

Coming to Vietnam Museum of Ethnology on Saturday or Sunday, tourists can participate in many exciting activities such as watching water puppet shows, enjoy traditional fine arts and festivals, etc. Also, after visiting the museum, they can buy some small and lovely souvenirs to make gifts for their family and friends.
